Illustration of a Bombus terrestris queen. Although native to Europe, it has been introduced to numerous locations around the world to provide pollination services, especially in greenhouse operations. You can find these bees in almost every state of the US—except Oregon, where it is illegal to import non-native bee species due to disease concerns. However, as they are used in hothouse operations in both Washington and California, it is only a matter of time before they can be found in Oregon.

Bombus terrestris was introduced to New Zealand because of the relatively poor pollinator diversity, and no native social bees. They have naturalized in the environment and now cover most of the north and south island.

Andrew Newey’s Striking Photographs of Traditional Honey Hunters in Nepal

With funding from the Austrian government, the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is addressing problems arising from commercialisation of honey hunting and the impact of tourism through the Himalayan Honeybees project. Coordinators of the project aim to work with traditional honey hunters to preserve their sustainable harvesting techniques. They also hope to find an effective way of regulating harvests by only licensing those with proven knowledge and experience, limiting the number of nests harvested and implementing a system of fines and punishment. The overall aim is to help communities reap financial benefit from an indigenous resource while preserving a bee species that will ensure the pollination of crops and maintenance of plant biodiversity in the long term.

Dreams Of Other Worlds is a new collaborative work by Orjis and Singh speaking of serenity and escape, focused on the pleasure of making. On show at We Are But Dust & Shadow  this work speaks of the mindfulness of repetition & is echoed in a collaboration with nature and the culture of the bees. As the work positions itself to reflect the words of D.K Suzuki from the book Into The light Of Things, ”To be satisfied with a little hut, a room of two or three tatami mats, like the log cabin of Thoreau”.

Bee Quilt

The material has been hand dyed with turmeric, tea and onions skins. Then hand printed with lino cuts to represent the larvae, workers, drones and the single queen bee. The quilt was then then pieced, quilted and bound by hand.

The bees are arranged in a rough imitation of the structure of a hive: the queen is surrounded by workers, each drone and larvae are attended by their own workers, while others form a circle to represent a “bee dance” and some stand guard at the entrance to the hive.
