Hannibal Rewatch: 1x13

Originally posted January 2016, reposted March 2019 after an algorithm looked at this post and thought “oh, no that’s far too explicit” and ate it whole without giving me a chance to appeal. Enjoy guessing which of these one thousand screenshot honked them off! I have my favorites.

Season 1, Episode 13: “Savoureux”
or, OH, THE SCALES / TUMBLING FROM MY EYES

**Warning: rewatch blogging, written with knowledge of the full series

Ok moment to talk about the “Previously On Hannibal”, if you can believe it, because they used the clip where Abigail asked Will if Hannibal had told him about her involvement with her dad’s murders and Will responding that he hadn’t, which, u may recall, I was fantastically floored to discover was a conversation that took place all in Will’s head. So the Previously On has ALSO gotten so wrapped up in Will that his imaginings are presented as part of the factual objective recap, and that’s marvelous to me. Because god, we’re in “Savoureux.” It’s the finale of Season 1, things fall apart, the center cannot hold, and from here on out, the relationship this show had with Will is fracturing. What tilting ice sheet are YOU gonna jump on as the glacier breaks apart?

LET’S FEEL IT OUT, as is our way.

Live Feed:

NOPE NOPE NOPE, T minus nope seconds into this and it’s THE BULLROARER. And that thing travels RIGHT down my spine to the tune of nOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOOOPE. Curse these nice headphones, fucking MONSTER TUNERS.

It sounds like hunting and the Gods and being encircled. All of that. I mean it’s, pun-intended, pitch perfect for where Brian Reitzell is using it, don’t get me wrong, that’s WHY I’m so upset. Because here’s Will, oh Will Graham, finally trying to hunt down the monster always in the corner of his eye. And he chases the Ravenstag, until at last he finds —

the Wendigo, hunched by a tree in the enchanted forest like Voldemort feeding on a unicorn. Angular and so hungry, crimson wet pools in the leaves. Will, run.

hi! I hope you're having a great week & will have a great weekend! at risk of sounding a bit nuts, I read and reread your Hannibal recaps regularly--they never fail to make me laugh, realize something new about the show, or [shudder] have feelings. They're really wonderful works of criticism. However, as I was going through my periodic reread, I noticed that 1.13 Savoureux was missing? Or perhaps the link is not quite right? If you have it, could you reupload it? Thanks!

WOW OKAY, FLATTERING? Thank you!!!!!! Wow!!!!

And the answer to the mystery is: Tumblr’s Indecency Algorithms went on the fritz for a couple of my Hannibal recaps. According to their support team I in fact unearthed a BUG where I have at least two posts flagged for ~sensitive content~ that do not appear in the little bin on my dash for me to review. I can’t submit them for a repeal, and so they’ve stayed hidden.

Normally I’d have linked to the two previous asks I’ve responded to about this with more information about the situation, but, well I am not one for conspiracy theories, but the fact is that I’ve just discovered both of those posts have vanished from my blog. Not suspicious at all! Real normal thing where no one is trying to cover up the evidence of their mistake I’m sure!! 🙃

Anyway my faith in Tumblr to remedy this situation, which they did reach out to me twice about back in January, has taken a real hit lately, so I’m taking matters into my own hands. Luckily I still had screenshots and TextEdit doc drafts of 1x13 and 2x06 on my backup drive, and so I’ve RECREATED THEM for you (as best I can) (may be some minor cosmetic differences).

Okay dash I hope you enjoy this little time travel situation coming your way.

Christine from Patreon here. Re: Secret History - do you think Donna Tartt is aware of the ridiculousness, or was she playing it totally straight? Personally, I thought there were a lot of (intentionally) funny parts in the book where she was poking fun at how pretentious the characters were, while still taking the emotions seriously. It reminded me of Hannibal in that aspect. I was not aware of all this ~East Coast Liberal Arts College Drama~ though, heh (I went to public uni in the Midwest).

Hellooooo!

To be convinced The Secret History was meaningfully intentional about it being a joke, someone would need to send me evidence of Donna Tartt having a sense of humor in real life, as the image *I* have gotten of her (admittedly a scanty one; I am not out there seeking out Donna Tartt content), is not.

You bring up Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal as an example, which is a great creator comparison because Fuller ALSO frequently dresses like he’s cosplaying his own work, but there’s just this pervading sense of self-seriousness I get off this

that I do not get off.. this

I think I’d call the difference “a certain camp aplomb”

Weimar Will Graham! I love it! Now I know why I love both shows. 🤣👍

Will Graham and Gereon Rath bear a remarkable functional similarity in the role they assume as trembly justice-driven overwhelmt™ self-medicating pretty featured & polite mannered weird smol male detective protagonist in a crime show that doubles as a psychological examination of trauma and fractured mental states as manifested in same. Gereon is also plagued by dubious pharmaceutical treatments, bullying bosses, large hoofed symbolic animal figures—really the similarities go on and on. And we’ve already hit the fandom benchmark where we start talking about how he’s female-coded and representative of the hurts masculinity inflicts on men as well, which is an interesting interpretive trend in the fanbase for these kinds of shows.

Comedy–

A story characterized by it’s satrical tone and it’s amusing depiction of unusual figures, in which the main character ultimately triumphs.

Tragedy –

A story dealing with a series of events that ends unhappily, with the inevitable downfall of the main character.

“The ultimate meaning to which all stories refer has two faces: The continuity of life, the inevitability of death. ”

now that's good this is some good ~graphic meta~ Hannibal comedy v. tragedy yeah

Your Hannibal commentary is everything I always trawled the internet for in reviews and never found. Omg. *clutches on*

Oh my goooddd, we found each other. Because I wrote them for people like you!! 😁

Also, general By The Way on this topic: another reader has recently brought to my attention that one (in fact two) of my Hannibal posts are currently SUSPENDED for EXPLICITNESS, and here’s where it gets fun: they have never shown up in my little “Review flagged posts” thing, so a) I did not know, b) I have no way to submit them for review. Wonderful! I have written to just… Tumblr Support.. on this matter, and they wrote back that it was a bug and they were working on it. So we’ll see I guess. If all else fails I’m pretty sure I should still have drafts of these saved in my backups, which means we may end up with an odd little scenario where I post anew something from 2016 era Wellntruly. Thank you for your patience in these trying times.
