See, that’s what the app is perfect for.

Sounds perfect Wahhhh, I don’t wanna

I got tagged by @sherlocks-freebitch to list my ten favorite shows, with gifs I think? The idea of making these choices thrills and horrifies me in equal measure so let’s do it.

Wellntruly’s Top Ten Shows As of This Day in August, 2018

Do you see what I cleverly did with this gif choice

Every. Year. I watch it every year.

Before…the Incident. I’m still working out my feelings with what happened here and DO have confusion over placement!

I get the sense it may have become passé to love this show, so chalk me up as a basic bitch then because I sure DO

I still haven’t had the courage to rewatch this after bawling my eyes out six years ago, but I’m pretty sure it’s a masterpiece.

Legion 2x10 Reaction

soundingonlyatnightasyousleep

Little late, lmao. I think this is the first Legion episode I’ve finished and not immediately gone “oh, I liked that.” Which is fitting and probably the intended reaction, but it sure is disconcerting

Some random thoughts:

  • I had forgotten what David’s iconic comics look was, and then was abruptly reminded of his titties-out glory by that first scene, damb
  • You know it’s a bad timeline because presumably evil David made Lenny wear a slinky silk gown…..good David respects her andro grunge look!!
  • Is she pregnant….OH NO. Can someone count up all the pregnancy references so far…There’s New Janine claiming to be pregnant last episode (??) and also I count Farouk!Lenny’s nonsense with the fungus re: David as pregnancy subtext….
  • Noah Hawley Liked Hannibal huh….the erudite baddie trying to convince a hero that a history of psychiatrization, institutionalization, and experiencing ableist violence actually reflects a propensity for uncontrolled evil
  • That said, of course I don’t fucking believe that being a traumatized telepath makes David inherently bad!!
  • Can’t help but compare with Hannibal though…Will just always felt entirely transparent and soft to me even when Hannibal was deploying similar narrative tricks to unbalance the audience’s sympathies towards them. I’m not sure if I am less sympathetic to David because of how I am, or because of how Legion is presenting him. Of course, Hannibal also has significantly better thematic clarity re: disability, which I suspect helps a lot.
  • I’m still not sure what to make of the minotaur, but having it break out of its wheelchair and forearm crutches and get ripped sure is….something
  • Oh yikes I just connected Future Syd not having an arm with current Syd’s hand injury….NICE, and also, is this Friends at the Table???
  • Have we seen Kerry fight in this fantastic high ponytail before? I suspect not, but she looks great
  • We get to see Lenny’s outfit more now and it is super great, thanks
  • I’m still super iffy on the monks as, uh, a bunch of silent Asian men who do mystical shit. The Vermillion were also pretty questionable, but imo they work as an explication of how a young Asian mutant was traumatized by military experiments. The monks are just dumb mystical aesthetic. I know we all know X-Men is racist, but pls

“You know it’s a bad timeline because presumably evil David made Lenny wear a slinky silk gown…..good David respects her andro grunge look!!” THE TRUTH. I heartily agree with like all of this but just wanted to highlight that one particularly, #good

And I totally agree about Hannibal having much better thematic clarity, about all sorts of issues! And that is SO INTERESTING to me, I actually had scrapped a whole tangent I’d gone on in this recap trying to figure out their method for that, compared to what Legion is doing. Hannibal was so fucking ambiguous all the time, and I wonder if that actually helped with the clarity, wildly? (thematic I mean, lol that was often the oooonly clarity it had!) But yeah, while the show always had a whole array of possible interpretations/lenses running simultaneously, even some contradictory ones, (and sure some stronger than others), you could always pick one or a couple to drop into and they would be internally consistent. That show just did everything, all at once all the time, and instead of being frustrating it wound up feeling rich and mythic and amorphous, with a whole number of strong themes.

I suspect that what Legion illustrates is the difference between ambiguity, and ambivalence. Legion OSCILLATES. It’s one thing, and then it’s the other, and then it’s the other one again a bit, and then back, and I’m not saying they should pick a hand, I’m saying THROW YOUR ARMS WIDE. Go boldly out into those ambiguous waters, where some of your strongest stuff has been! Probably I just don’t think shows that are doing some of the things these two are doing should even have This Or That questions. Or they absolutely should, but the answer should always be: Yes.

(Anyway fwiw, if you’re looking for data, I find David just as transparent and soft as I did Will, my sympathy and like, loyalty under narrative duress take a veerry similar shape with the two of them.)
