Saying that man and woman are the only genders is actually LESS nuanced than saying that earth, water, air, and fire are the only elements.
So, this post turns two years old in a few days and it just hit 150,000 notes. That makes it, once again, far and away the most-noted post on this blog (by an order of magnitude). And while there have been some haters over the years, most of the response has been glowing. When I used this powerpoint in class, it hit the eyeballs of fewer than 10 students. It was my last time teaching the course I made it for, so I threw it up on tumblr, like I used to do with so many things. I never expected anyone but a few ardent followers to see it.
But in the last two years the opposite has happened. An outpouring of love from people who connected to it. As a college professor, by now I’ve had thousands of students in my classes, and I wouldn’t trade that face-to-face engagement for anything. But the life that this post took on is, without a doubt, the most humbling and validating experience I’ve ever had as a teacher:
