The weirdly persistent idea that liking and disliking certain movies indicates someone belongs to a club of shared values has perhaps never been more obviously ridiculous than in this, the year that Elon Musk named Parasite his favorite film of 2019

Just to further drill into this!—this glorified subtweet was actually inspired by  the people every year painting some movies as morally Bad and only liked by other groups, unlike the Good movies liked by their group. I understand the desire for the world to be divided that simply, but it is not! A person who has the wholly opposite opinion from you on one movie may agree with you utterly on another! You just never can tell and I think that’s good to remember, before writing off everyone who likes a movie you don’t with a “well I’m different.” Because it’s just not true, on some movies you’ll be just the same as them. And sometimes Elon Musk will also want Parasite to win best picture.
