And now I am finally (!) going to watch David Ehrlich's best films of 2021 video. Here are my official bets for which needle drops or original songs of this past year might be featured, let's see how I dooo:

'The Winner Takes It All', ABBA (Bergman Island)

'All I Need Is a Miracle', Mike & The Mechanics (Spencer)

*'Sometimes', Erasure (The Souvenir: Part II)

'Both Sides Now', Joni Mitchell [Emilia Jones] (CODA)

**'So May We Start', Sparks (Annette)

good lord anything from House of Gucci

'White Rabbit', Jefferson Airplane (The Matrix Resurrections)

'Everlasting Love', Love Affair (Belfast)

*extra bet that the shot of people beginning to build a film set while this plays will be the exact opening, plus or minus the shot of Honor Swinton Byrne turning to the camera holding a camera

**this is the other exact opening option

He started with the Dune throat-singing. Ha ha okay I did not predict that!

But: Honor Swinton Byrne turning to the camera with her camera was the shot for the title card, and the first real song was ‘So May We Start’ — NAILED THOSE. There were in fact three songs from Annette in total, which I also hadn’t expected but Respect:

'All I Need Is A Miracle’!!!! Got it!!!!

Though neglecting to think of the song I heard approximately 500 (or five) times at every showing the Licorice Pizza trailer played at was a serious whoopsie.

All told I think I did “pretty okay considering the scope of possibilities”?

'Staying Alive' as the Green Knight song is hilarious I mean in general his song picks tend to create a lot of lyrical joy in what they play over and I don't really know how he does that given that they all cover several films often wildly different in tone editing! David Ehrlich music The Movies

Andrew Bird covering Mitski’s “Working for the Knife”.

“This song caught my ear. Has everything I love in a great song. Interesting melody. Slightly ambiguous refrain prompting debate over what the knife is referring to.”

this is tripping me out in the best way I am not frequently coming across this kind of thing in my music life! it's Andrew Bird! it's Mitski! all tumbled together! anyway phenomenal that ''everything I [Andrew Bird] love in a great song'' is just 1) interesting melody 2) ambiguous lines about knives also that we get a glimpse of his very peaceful house (you gotta look up this house! the arches cut into the stairwell..)
