So THIS episode sends the gang off to a giant haunted estate in dreary old England, haunted by GHOST LENNY, and I SCREAM. Every scene is even more ~Tableaus~ than usual, and then suddenly bam! John Malkovich is there wearing violet and a smoky eye and he is Sad and Loungey like an artfully depressed fop who speaks in riddles and plays a harp and is definitely addicted to some sort of drug in this golden box yes? Oh we ready for this!!

THE NEW POPE - 1x01

Since the summer of 2018 I’ve enjoyed saying sentences like “my favorite television show, The Young Pope,” because that was maybe outrageous enough to commit to.

I realize now that…it was also outrageous enough to be true. IT’S TRUE.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, makes me feel as absolutely HIGH OFF MY ASS ON JOY as The Young, now New Pope. I love every crazed-begotten thing this art hoegram does. Every single moment, I am elated. Because every single moment is either, but more frequently simultaneously, Sumptuous - Sincere - Surreal - Hysterical - Tender. And terrifyingly well-written. Every 50 min episode feels like a you’ve just watched a feature film’s worth of Character and Theme, and yet Paolo Sorrentino is never in any rush, he does it all with the pace and demeanor of someone dipping to trail their hand luxuriously through a fountain as they pass through a courtyard. The credits might be a two-minute slow motion dance pop music video lit by a pulsing crucifix. Whole sequences occur without dialogue, only images. Then a sequence will occur that’s composed of just a litany of cardinals’ prayers in different languages. A little scene happens with no one you’ve ever seen before. A little scene happens where almost everyone you care about is stuffed into a closet plotting the future of the Vatican. In just this single episode an entire papal empire rises and falls, I danced three times, and at one point I almost started crying softly??
