I Went To the Desert For a Month and We Ate So Well

Pictured: shrimp & grits with crunchy seeded salad; sesame ghraiba homs; tabbouleh and grilled halloumi; herbed feta dip with pistachios; I didn’t make this but this was the best sundubu-jjigae I’ve ever had; pastelillos de guayaba; simple chili crisp fried rice with scallions and egg and sunomono; Damask rose tea in my newly thrifted iridescent marigold teacups

Not pictured: rainbow veggie burgers with Boca patties, shredded beets and carrots, avocado, and turmeric black pepper mayo; harissa butter beans; ginger coconut meatballs (swapped turkey instead of pork); Peace, Love & Energy dip; vanilla ice cream with sumac; palak ki tiki eggs Kejriwal style; root beer floats; rhubarb rose drink syrup; roast chicken with apricots and olives; Caesar salads with crispy chickpeas (and dirty martinis); burnt eggplant dip with tahini & pomegranate molasses; poblano & onion breakfast tacos; coconut cookies (these with coconut butter instead of peanut butter—a mistaken purchase—and toasted coconut flakes subbed for the peanuts); Tunisian shakshuka, though instead of using the shrimp there we put them in this banh mi situation; Sichuan-ish lamb burgers; “suea rong hai” smashed potatoes; mujaddara with spiced yogurt; roasted salad niçoise; pasta c'anciuova e muddica atturrata with grilled asparagus & zucchini; and rhubarb & pistachio blinis

Psych you do get to see the blinis!!

Been a while!! Picked the recent meals that looked the best in a set together—Food Photography Winter Edition (lots of browns and greens)

1. halibut bourride, a very French fish stew (this particular version from the Le Crueset cookbook) with leeks, fennel, a whole 1.5 cups of white wine, and the creaminess all coming from an aioli stirred in at the end, 2. Bryant Terry’s farro & kidney beans, Jamaican style (cooked with coconut milk and allspice) and topped with toasty cayenne-garlic scallions, 3. bay-poached chicken salad with slivered scallions, poppy seeds, and pickled celery, on dark rye with butter lettuce, 4. the frog-green soup by Anna Thomas that I make several times every winter – main features always include lacinato kale, chard, parsley, potato, onion, and lemon, 5. black beluga lentils with ginger and garam masala, topped with cream and butter, 6. tiny diner breakfast of crispy hash browns, dab of sour cream, and a sunny-side up egg (did I end up getting the hash browns *too* crispy and ultimately picked it up and ate it like flatbread? yes)

Folks….. I decided this of all nights was a night I should perhaps watch Saturday Night Live actually live for the first time in my life, because THERE’S JUST SO MUCH MATERIAL, it’s Historic, etc.

But there was some college football game that went into superovertime, ran fully I think 18 minutes into when SNL was supposed to be happening, and now that that’s wrapped NBC, scrambling, has had to throw to all their local news affiliates to fill time before re-starting the national broadcast at….who knows when exactly?? but for what will definitely now be, by Eastern time, SUNDAY MORNING LIVE

ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. NOTHING ELSE MAKES MORE SENSE FOR THIS WEEK. I’m honestly living, I’ve got hot chocolate, This Might As Well Happen dot Mulaney

Hello I am back. The first thing I saw when I woke up at 6:15am was Justin McElroy’s vertigo-inducing Decision Desk Update, and the second was sashayed taking about the French talking about Gritty, to which I am eager to add this genuine & genuinely delivered thing Chris Hayes said last night that in my delirium I most carefully wrote down:

“Someone described it as a rave-like atmosphere, and I saw some Grittys out there of course which is always wonderful to see, it means American democracy is on the forward march. District Attorney Larry Krasner of Philadelphia, thank you so much.”

Left at lunchtime due to a) no sleep b) general prolonged stress and c) my uterus and intestines making a break for the border. Heating pad- on, couch- cozy, Twitter- refreshed

Excellent, deranged, good

I have completed An Task for work, and also have made this graph of how much I have thought about Clark County, NV over the calendar year 2020
