The second full trailer for Rogue One gives us our first look at Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) and Darth Vader in action, plus more of the rest of the crew.

There is a star trek TNG episode where Picard encounters a race that doesn’t speak in actual structured sentences but conveys ideas through story parralels. The ones referenced here are “Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra” - cooperation, “Shaka, when the walls fell” - failure and Temba, his arms wide/open" - signifying a gift.

OK, but here’s what’s awesome/hilarious about this.

The whole point about why communicating with the Tamarians was so frustrating was because all of their communication was contextual. The problem wasn’t that Picard couldn’t understand what words they were saying (the universal translator worked fine) the problem was that he didn’t understand what THOSE WORDS TOGETHER HAD TO DO WITH ANYTHING.

Why is this hilarious/fascinating to me? Because this is essentially what people are doing today with memes. They are posting pictures and writing sentences THAT MAKE NO SENSE WITHOUT PRIOR CONTEXT.

If Picard beamed down right now, and you told him that Data is a cinnamon roll… you are a Tamarian.

holy HECK I love so much about all of this!!! Darmok and Jalad Star Trek Star Trek TNG Star Wars The Force Awakens words mythology

Lando’s hands though.

Like is that awkward guilt or paternal comfort or grounding in reality or just ‘I’m moving through your space because this cockpit is tiny and I don’t want to startle you’ idek all four probably.

fialleril

Definitely all four. Lando doesn’t get nearly enough credit for being this actually incredibly compassionate and empathetic person. I mean, in a lot of ways his character arc mirrors that of Luke and Leia - he’s just lost his world and his people, and he’s not sure what will happen to them or if all or even some of them will make out of Bespin alive and safe. He did his absolute best to save them, but the thing is Cloud City was his home, his world, he cared about it, he loved it, he loved his people, and now he’s lost all that. But he’s still there, focusing on what he can save, helping and offering comfort to Luke and Leia (neither of whom he actually knows), watching the life he’s built for himself go up in smoke and just letting it go, because there are people who need his help.

Lando’s the responsible one. He says it as a joke to Han, but he really is. There’s a lot more to his character than just the scoundrel. And I just love him so, so much.

#lando caldrissian #my actual fav character ever

!!! Daughter, he’s my favourite Star Wars character too! And one of my all time favourites!

Billy Dee Williams managed to give him more depth then most (if not all) of the other characters with just a fraction of the screen time. He had more charm, charisma, energy, conflict…He could have carried the movies all by himself.

kelitchka

Yes to all of this.

To add – I recently got to see Billy Dee Williams at the EMP in Seattle and he was just amazing. He spoke about how he never thought Lando betrayed Han and that he was one of the only characters to stand up to Vader (it didn’t work but he tried). Williams based Lando a bit on Errol Flynn. The whole talk was amazing. The best part was when the moderator asked Williams if in RotJ, when he was piloting the falcon it was hard to act with an alien that spoke gibberish.

And Billy Dee Williams interrupted with, Nien Nunb.

What?

That was my co-pilot, Nien Nunb.

I will be very upset if we don’t see Lando in Episode VIII.
