In the first episode of Netflix’s Stranger Things, there’s a slip of an X-Men reference. It’s tiny, barely there.

“Race back to my place? Winner gets a comic,” Dustin says, as he and Will speed home.

“Any comic?” Will says, before taking off into the darkness. “I’ll take your X-Men 134!”

That mention of a specific X-Men comic is the last thing Will says to his friend, and to the audience, before disappearing. And it’s not just a random comic book in Dustin’s collection.

Uncanny X-Men No. 134 is one of the most popular and significant issues in X-Men canon. It kicks off the most important X-Men story in Marvel history, and it contains the first appearance of one of the most destructive forces in the X-Men universe. And viewed through the lens of Stranger Things, it’s both a taste of what’s to come on the show and an homage to the X-Men character known as Jean Grey.

OH HI Stranger Things X Men superheroes every X-reference made me grin so big and glowy!

In my five years of watching superhero movies, I have yet to identify as much with a character as I do Charles Xavier, Problematic Optimist. This has more to do with his trash qualities than his good ones, specifically:

- a nerd
- really thinks others should hear about his nerd interests
- can sway people to see things the way he does, and thinks he OUGHT to
- because he’s so sure this way is the best
- inappropriately enthusiastic about objectively negative shit as long as the experience is ~novel~
- annoyingly resilient
- uses friendship markers as forms of address
- preternaturally introspective
- but doesn’t tell people what’s really going on with him and evasive if asked
- Most Likely To Not Show Up For The Thing
- got pretty down & out that one time but like, listen [rationalizes own pity party]
- oddly judgmental for someone who seems to always see the best in things
- flirts his way into your good graces; does not deliver
- would prefer everyone just come over to his place
- and just
- madly in love with Erik Lehnsherr

In honor of another surprising uptick in the popularity of this dismaying self character study, some things I’ve done since posting it that have caused a friend to holler “EMBRACE YOUR DESTINY, CHAAARLES” at me:

- drinking and having feelings about Magneto
- being cheerfully/casually/creepily confident about in-person persuasion skills
- getting overly invested in the lives & dreams of the children on the Teen Chopped episode I was scripting
- “I’ve never loved anything with so much potential!”

It has also occurred to me that the character I would always get in Harry Potter personality quizzes was Dumbledore, whom I see now is just, Wizard Xavier…

I had no idea my life was this joke about me X Men X Men Content superheroes
