Weimar Will Graham! I love it! Now I know why I love both shows. 🤣👍

Will Graham and Gereon Rath bear a remarkable functional similarity in the role they assume as trembly justice-driven overwhelmt™ self-medicating pretty featured & polite mannered weird smol male detective protagonist in a crime show that doubles as a psychological examination of trauma and fractured mental states as manifested in same. Gereon is also plagued by dubious pharmaceutical treatments, bullying bosses, large hoofed symbolic animal figures—really the similarities go on and on. And we’ve already hit the fandom benchmark where we start talking about how he’s female-coded and representative of the hurts masculinity inflicts on men as well, which is an interesting interpretive trend in the fanbase for these kinds of shows.

die-ritterin-deactivated2019090 asked:

I see that you like both babylon berlin and his dark materials (which I also love with all my heart) so I have to ask… do you have a babylon berlin deamon au?

secifosseluce answered:

oh, this is such a good question. i can’t believe I’ve never thought about it until now! I’ll do a part two soon.

i’m so conflicted about Gereon. i can see him having any über banal mammal form, but one that still turns out to be very capable and useful despite being so common – sort of a metaphor for a generation of men used as cannon fodder, one as useful as the other, despite all their individual strengths & peculiarities. like, the war impacted these dramatically young men so much that their entire personalities remained stuck on a few, deeply ingrained concepts, and the consequence is that they all settled in not identical, but similar forms.

(he DEFINITELY settled in a trench)

OR I can see him having an objectively…odd daemon. something small and quirky that kind of signals him being broken from wwi onward. a bat would be good in this scenario.

OR, even more heartbreaking…Gereon never really settled, at all. or reverted back to an unsettled stage. that’s why bruno and the other, non-PTSD-burdened people refer to psychologically-traumatized veterans as “broken machines” – because their own souls reflect this brokenness. they wear the war on their most intimate part. mixed animals, ugly crossovers, creepy-looking things that other people look down on.

gereon could have a form that’s only slightly out of the norm, and that only adds to his anxiety (who will be he first to notice? when people look at her like that, are they wondering wether we’re normal?)

Charlotte is going to be another hard one, given that she’s my favorite character. i know i’ve described her as a stray cat before, but I’m not sure it holds enough ground for it to be her form. i need to think about it. (whatever it is, though, he’s witty and answers back quiet often. he loves dancing as much as she does.  he needs to be quick, resistant, i-may-be-small-but-i’m-hard-to-kill animal, too)

Greta has a small dog-daemon. a friendly-looking, fast-tailed creature; all big brown eyes and white & ginger fur. excitable, and chatty, much more than greta is. dogs are known to be very faithful, maybe even a bit gullible, but sweet and lovable – which Greta definitely is.

maybe a mix between a beagle and a calmer breed?

Stephan settled as a songbird – maybe a mockingbird? or a nightingale, something plain, small and not flashy at all, but with a splendid voice.

his parents’ daemons would listen to her songs and move their paws/beaks/tails across their humans’ skin following the rhythm, so they could hear them too.

Kardakov has a beautiful, long-legged, rusty-colored female dog. i can see her having a honest look to her. dogs are loyal, and kardakov has always been ready to die for a cause.

she’s missing one ear, and by the end of the series she walks with a small, but noticeable, limp.

Svetlana: i’m obsessed with her having an objectively ugly, off-putting daemon. maybe some type of mantis? but i’m thinking about something that gives an air of ambivalence… i’d say a mutt of some sorts; a bulky, snarling thing, and female, too. probably some sort of half-dog, half-ukrainian wolf mix? a woking-class daemon. bulky, ferocious-looking even with a diamond collar on.

her father never really took any care to explain to Svetlana how settling works, and just shrugged at her daemon’s form and said that he always knew she was dangerous. Svetlana was always both darkly proud of her being so ugly, and at the same time she held a deeply shame because of it. but she’s got teeth that could easily crush a man’s bones, and her dusty-colored, opaque, unrefined fur is hugely effective when she pairs it with an expensive grey coat.

she knows people are entranced by this beautiful lady followed by her dog daemon, and that they explain it to themselves with stories about the ugliness of the war and how it changes people, forces them to change – but she knows better. take off the makeup and the jewelry, and she’s as blank and ruthless as the taiga. her daemon reflects that.

The Armenian has an octopus. he keeps her in the aquarium in his restaurant. people actually don’t know she’s his daemon until he nonchalantly puts his hand on the cold glass and they see her tentacle rising from the bottom floor to meet it.

secifosseluce

My first thought for Gereon was a mouse - small, quiet, easy to hide in his pocket, but tough and resilient. Anno, of course, has a falcon or eagle or some other bird of prey (“hey, Gereon, if my daemon eats yours…what would happen to you?”) @standuptragicomedy

Ari’s mind is so powerful…this is perfect

(also, anno literally means powerful as an eagle SO)

wellntruly

A symptom of PTSD manifesting as your daemon reverting back to an unsettled form oh my god oh my god oh Yes, imagine!!! You both pretend desperately, your daemon trying so hard to always hold the form they had before so that no one knows, but something clangs bad against your strained injured nerves and you break and your daemon breaks with you, shaking and flickering against your chest claws fur feathers as you try to clutch each other still, but everyone sees how you are wrong and and unstable and damaged, one of The Broken Ones. God and the barbiturates…trying to keep your daemon sluggish and less liable to change, even though it makes you both feel half dead. Corinna this lit my eyes up, and then Ari with Gereon’s mouse daemon and this line from young Anno, utterly perfectly shivering!!!!

Anyway all of these are tremendous. And if we’re still mulling Charlotte, Lotte with a cat is lovely, and she’s so chirpy I can also see her with a bird daemon, inquisitive and light and resilient, wings dancing in the air, a quick eye for plucking up treasures.

Babylon Berlin, Second Pass: Episode 5

I would move “keep Babylon Berlining” to the next day on my to-do list, every day when I had not kept Babylon Berlining. Until eventually it got to the point that when I went to sadly move it once again I uttered a small cry! And then I just threw reasonableness to the winds, stayed up with my Be-babies past 1am, stole about four hours of sleep, and then swung back up a little after 5 to go into work and conduct an interview. So really livin’ that method-watching, actually. After work I got my hair cut into a bob to curl around my shadowed eyes; it’s probably fine.

Anyway this episode is: The Best. My favorite?

In this installment:

- Kardakov’s injuries reach operatically comical extents!
- Tinker Tailor Weimar Spy, Boy I Die!
- I learn the word ‘schön’!
- They! Go! Out!

There are so, so many screencaps below, some of which I may end up draping on their own posts too just to admire them again, but that one gets a special pre-cut commendation because that shot is a thesis. That is image as essay. And I’m just like

You made me rewatch Babylon Berlin and bOY do I love this show. I live for it. The characters are amazing, the story keeps you on your toes all the time and the look of it? MWAH. And it is in my native language (I'm german)!!! I usually never watch shows but this one is too good to resist. And watching it a second time is almost better than the first time because you really get the gist of everything. But also: I have to see my favourite die again.

standuptragicomedy answered:

LISTEN I watched it the first time in March of last year, posted about it a little, and didn’t think about it again until I went through the tag and stumbled across @wellntruly ‘s Thoughts so what I’m saying is TARRA THIS IS 1000% YOUR FAULT.

Also YEAH I’m about to start another rewatch for the Gender Meta and uh…MAYBE NOBODY I LOVE WILL DIE THIS TIME.

I know I still owe the internet my Babylon Berlin Gender Meta but now I’m also fascinated by Gereon and Lotte’s relationship and the way they basically live the same half-lives but in opposite directions and like…that’s only tangentially related to the gender thing so basically what I’m saying is this is going to turn into another Highly Detailed Notes Rewatch With Beautiful Screencaps.

Oops.

legend, feel free to drop both or the one you feel more drawn to at the moment, I know that me & the 23 people in this fandom will win regardless. they’re both such engrossing topics and it’s time the gereon-lotte dynamic that I’ve…..kinda talked about in one of my absurdly long tag metas receives its own proper post. we win either way, your Highly Detailed Notes Rewatch With Beautiful Screencaps are 10/10

Yay yes Babylon Bebuddies!! And I promise oh god I promise soon I will be less stupidly overcommitted, and will be able to continue my own second watch posts! It’s like part of my heart has been holding its breath these last eleven (twelve?) days, I tell ya.

I'm always a bit stunned that someone could like my ramblings! Thank you so much. and: yes. yes to everything. the 16th mechanical monk is so much up my alley, it’s directly inside my apartment. the concept of gereon as a broken machine is one of the rawest one i got from the series – and of course one of my favorites. also, please put Gereon the Broken Wind-Up Saint of the Weimar Republic on my tombstone.

(tbh nobody had ever complimented me using a quote by The Jeff Goldblum….accept my marriage proposal please)

I like them so much! Thank you for spooling these out for eager gatherers like me! And, yes, why not, ring the bells for our slapdash cross-Atlantic engagement built on a mutual love for intent-eyed clockwork holy men

standuptragicomedy asked:

So I was curious and looked up all the relevant saints to see if the naming was just Cologne-specific or somehow Extra Relevant and St Gereon is the patron saint of Knights of Cologne (so I guess the police department too) and is often invoked against migraines and headaches which makes sense cause our Gereon's life is just one massive headache.

I explained Edgar to one of my friends with the words “His whole thing is ‘be gay do crimes’ and honestly I am into it.”
Also YES Gereon and Lotte’s dynamic is BEAUTIFUL! They balance each other and build so well off each other and I cannot wait for the next season when they get to work together properly. Like even putting aside the Perfect Detective Team, can you IMAGINE the office banter???

Pffft you’re right that is his vibe

I’d argue that in fact it’s impossible to be the Perfect Detective Team without just slaughtering the ‘Banter’ area. Because that’s how we know you could pilot a jaeger, which is basically what fictional crime solving is. God I love detective stories they’re just fantasy stories with different good hats.
