tbh i think the difference between trapper and bj is that trapper saw hawkeye's unwellness (before it got really bad) and tried helping in his own way (joking around) and bj didn't see it (when it was really bad) and tried ignoring in his own way (joking around)

Joe Reid voice: I think that's right honestly I think this was actually something they deliberately tried to make different in BJ which I think you can see clearest in early S4's 'The Late Captain Pierce' which just seems so much like it was originally written presuming Trapper would still be there someone who canonically appears in seemingly most of the letters from his son shaped like a best friend absolutely makes sense for Daniel Pierce to reach out to this new doctor who has just arrived: does not and the way BJ behaves with Hawkeye in that episode is so akin to how we've seen Trapper be with him attentive and watchful and just trying to steer him away from the edges imagine the events of that episode occurring in say Season 8 -- BJ would be TOTALLY different about it it's Season 5 when they really start to define BJ differently where the way he tries to cope/interact with the people in his life is mostly through weird distracting games and askance social engineerin a complicated indirectness that is just not part of Trapper's MO at all you're distressed and he likes you: he's just warmly wrapping you in his arms and calling you honey c.f. 'Bombed' which tried to kill ME on rewatch anyway yeah: I think you're on to something no one can fully help Hawkeye until he actually lets someone as he's designed everything so that he can always keep tap-dancing just out of reach at the last minute but it does seem Trapper's energy was a good fit for him when things were bad as early as the sixth episode Trapper is saying he's the only one who can handle him and the context is that it's all part of Hawkeye's “going mad” “ruse” but looking back it's still like yeah. that seems true it's what makes it doubly painful when Trapper is ripped away from him because you're just like oh no...what's Hawkeye gonna DO and the answer is: get worse <3 to be clear: this is good narratively do you think I've written enough tags M*A*S*H
