Couldn’t agree more on PT Anderson, whose brilliance I sometimes observe, uninvited, if that makes sense. He doesn’t care if I get it, and it’s exhilarating.
See, I don’t know if I’m exhilarated by that! Actually I do know and I’m not. Paul Thomas Anderson has an amazingly powerful artistic vision, he is with absolute certainty a Visionary and I respect that and applaud it. But for me, I wanna reserve the word “brilliant” for things that speak to viewers, as opposed to just saying what they want to say and it’s up to you to grok it or not. Sometimes I think the film world overly praises the obtuse because a lot of people like the cerebral and emotional exercise of puzzling over something and feeling it out until they’ve Gotten It, and absolutely there’s an artistry in creating a densely wrought work that people actually want to puzzle over, but I think this creates a culture that undervalues the possibly more impressive artistry that goes into making something lucid, something that falls straight into your soul. Something no one can walk away from without having Gotten It. It’s a shame that “accessible” can be used as a slight, when doing that well, with something that’s meaningful, is such an advanced magic.
